Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. – Matthew 21:21
A mustard seed is a tiny little thing. Jesus says if we just have the faith of that tiny little mustard seed, our faith could accomplish things… move the mountain… if we just had faith.
Sometimes having faith is an easy thing. When things are going well for us in life, it’s easy to have faith concerning this or that. But when things aren’t going so well, those are the times that test our faith, our resolve. That’s when we really need to be strong in our faith, to keep on believing, to keep on trusting in God that all will work out as He wants it to.
And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. – Matthew 17:20
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you. – Luke 17:6
So how do we have faith enough to tell the mountain to move and it will move?
First, there are many things in life that are mountains – not just a literal mountain. It might be finances, a misunderstanding with a loved one, moving to a new city, a new job, education, issues with a child, relationship problems, needing to learn how to do something, etc.
Second, faith goes hand in hand with trust. You have faith that when you flip a light switch that the light will come on. Sometimes the power goes out and sometimes the light bulb is blown. Both of those are easy things to take care of and once again the light comes on when you flip the switch to turn it on. You have faith that when you inhale, you will breath, air goes into your body. You have faith that you will exhale and the air will leave your body. And you have faith that you will repeat this over and over and that it will work and you will breathe. You have faith that your heart will beat over and over and keep you alive. You do this without thinking. But it’s still faith.
You trust that so and so will do what it’s supposed to to or needs to do when it needs to do it. And having faith on things that you think about, as opposed to what you do without thinking, is pretty much the same. You just have to believe that what you need to happen will happen. If something is standing in the path, in the way, tell it to move and have faith that it will indeed move, and according to God’s Word that mountain will move.
Sometimes the mountain in front of us isn’t physical or something that can literally move out of the way. Sometimes it’s things like pride that takes the form of a mountain. Pride can ruin so many relationships. Whether it’s us or the other party, pride has killed many relationships – marriages, friendships. Pride is a tricky mountain. To move a mountain of pride, it really takes more than faith to move it. You have to put yourself out there, risking hurt and humiliation, trusting when trust has been broken, and take an emotional chance. Not so easy to do. It really comes down to how badly you want to mend a relationship.
Having faith that a mountain will move when you tell it to move puts that mustard seed to work. It’s just a tiny little mustard seed. It really takes only a little faith, the size of that mustard seed, to move a mountain. Just imagine what you could do with a lot of faith! 🙂
